The Zambezi Region is home to an incredible variety of roughly 350 different avian species; a good number of this number is thanks to our migrants who generally start arriving in the warmer months September and leaving us from March as our winter approaches. Of course this does not mean the end of birding for us, we still have an enormous amount of birding to experience. Whether a “novice” or “twitcher” there is no better way in seeing parts of the Zambezi River that few people ever get to experience. Navigating around the numerous islands that surround the Victoria Falls water ways or along the main shore line, on a private boat with an experienced Birding Guide you will be sure to have a great experience.

Half day

A Half Day Birding Trip will begin at 06:30am; where you will be picked up from your Hotel or Lodge, and almost immediately the Birding begins. With two or three hours driving along the Zambezi river front, you will get onto a boat and spend the next couple of hours on the river, cruising the reed islands in search of a few new species for the morning. The Half Day Birding Trips will include a packed breakfast along with Freshly Brewed Coffee or Tea with an assortment of biscuits and fruit, as it warms up, bottled water or soft drinks will also be on offer.

Full day

You will be met at your hotel at 06:30am, for the beginning of a great day, your first port of call will be the shore line along the Zambezi River, here you have a great chance at seeing the all important: Schalows Turaco, African Palm Swift, Collared Palm Thrush, Brown Firefinch, Northern Grey Headed Sparrow, Luapula Cisticola, Chirping Cisticola, Ruff, after a couple of hours scouring the river front we will climb aboard a boat specific for birding for another couple of hours, here we are looking for the: Long Toed Lapwing, Rock Pratincole, African Finfoot, White Backed Night Heron, Half Collared King Fisher, African Skimmer, Rock Pratincole, Black Winged Pratincole and the Rufous Bellied Heron.

For Lunch we will either spend it under a shady tree on one of the many islands or pop into one of the Café’s who are situated along the Zambezi River!

After lunch we will travel inland either to one of the grassy plains, in search of some Kestrels, Blue Cheeked Bee-Eaters, European Bee Eaters, Black Coucal, Stanley’s Bustard, Helmeted Guinea Fowl or one of the many seasonal Cuckoo’s.

Or alternatively we will go to Gorges Lodge, where there is a chance of the Verreaux’s Eagle, Taita Falcon or the Augur Buzzard that all inhabit the Gorge below! We will do some walking here along the edge of the gorge, with birding a little slower but some real treats if all goes to plan.

When we meet up we can discuss the idea of going to Gorges Lodge or into the Grassy Plains.

Your full day will include a Continental Breakfast, teas and coffees, waters, Lunch, Soft drinks, wines and Beer, with a small selection of snacks to end the day!
